Some examples of what you will learn in the course are:
  • Pronounce Spanish, including first and last names
  • Welcome students and families into your space
  • Introduce yourself and what you do
  • Ask parents if they would like an interpreter
  • Ask students how they are feeling (physically and emotionally)
  • Ask students what they need (e.g. a drink of water, a nap, a call home, etc. - you tell me!) 
  • Ask students about what hurts or what is bothering them
  • Explain basic procedures or routines (e.g. 24 hours fever-free, paperwork return date, etc.)
  • Schedule meetings with caregivers
  • Inform families about the basics of what is going on with their child
  • Handle it when you feel "in over your head" 
  • Minimize miscommunications and cultural misunderstandings.
